Ars Docendi: Gudrun Weisz Receives Recognition Award for Excellent Teaching

12 September, 2024

The “Mastering Mathematics” project received the recognition award for innovative teaching concepts to promote studyability at UAS Technikum Wien as part of the Ars Docendi State Prize.

Gudrun Weisz, Senior Lecturer at UAS Technikum Wien, was awarded the recognition prize in the category “Quality improvement of teaching and studyability” for her project “Mastering mathematics” as part of the State Prize Ars Docendi. The prize was presented by Martin Netzer (Secretary General of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research) in the ballroom of the Academy of Sciences on September 10, 2024.

“Mastering mathematics”: a successful concept

The project impresses with an innovative blended learning approach that helps students to acquire complex mathematical content efficiently. The focus is on improving the studyability of mathematics through tailored learning videos and individual support from the “Math Support” team. Over 300 learning videos have been produced in UAS Technikum Wien’s in-house “eLab” and are available to students for self-study. These multimedia resources encourage students to work through the course content independently and make a significant contribution to the success of their studies. During the attendance phases, what has been learned is deepened in small groups, which provides additional support for the students. The project aims to make it easier for students to study through innovative teaching methods and modern technologies.

In addition to Gudrun Weisz, other representatives of UAS Technikum Wien were also present at the award ceremony: Barbara Czak-Pobeheim (Managing Director), Florian Eckkrammer (Managing Director), Sylvia Geyer (Rector), Sylvia Lingo (Head of Teaching and Learning Center) and Alexander Mense (Head of Faculty Computer Science & Applied Mathematics).

Recognition for excellent teaching

The Ars Docendi State Prize, which has been awarded since 2013, honors excellent teaching in five categories. The jury, consisting of international experts, particularly emphasized the effectiveness of the teaching materials and methods developed by Weisz. The recognition award underlines the importance of quality and innovation in teaching, which play a central role at UAS Technikum Wien.

With her commitment and the development of the “Mastering Mathematics” project, Gudrun Weisz makes a significant contribution to the further development of teaching at UAS Technikum Wien and sets new standards in the teaching of mathematical content.

All submissions – along with numerous other examples of excellent teaching – are documented in the online compendium “Atlas of Good Teaching” (www.gutelehre.at).
