Assistive technologies from FH Technikum Wien help people with disabilities in Romania

21 June, 2023

As part of the Inclusion International project funded by the City of Vienna, therapists in the Romanian city of Săcele were trained on open source tools.

At the beginning of May 2023, Agnes Scheibenreif and Alija Sabic held a workshop on Assistive Technologies developed at FH Technikum Wien (FABI, FLipMouse, Asterics Grid, FLipPad) in the Romanian city of Săcele (near Brașov) as part of the Inclusion International project funded by the City of Vienna (Proj.-Nr: 33-02).

The aim of the workshop was to train therapists from different organizations on the use and configuration of the open source tools and then to test them directly with the involvement of people with disabilities.

Therapists from the following organizations were present:

At the beginning, the therapists (speech therapists, occupational therapists, etc.) and the staff of the above mentioned organizations were trained in the above mentioned assistive technologies. FABI (Flexible Assistive Button Interface), FLipMouse (Finger and Lip Mouse) and FLipPad provide alternative input to the traditional keyboard and mouse to control the computer or the environment. AsTeRICS Grid is a web-based AAC software (symbol-based communication and computer-generated speech), also provides environment control functions, and can be operated with the above assistive input devices.

Subsequently, the devices were tested by people with disabilities. Both adults and children were selected and individual configurations were made and tested together with the therapists.  At the end of the workshop, the assistive technologies used were made available to the organizations and appropriate people with disabilities.
