Boosting English skills with a side of Fish and Chips: a journey of language learning in Dublin

01 August, 2023

Some employees of UAS Technikum Wien went to Dublin this year to participate in an English course at the Centre of English Studies as a further education measure.

Twelve colleagues from the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and the units InfoCenter, Teaching & Learning Center, Legal & Compliance, Finance & Procurement, Project & Process Management and the Rectorate went to Dublin again this year to take part in a 30-hour English course at the Centre of English Studies.

Dominik Schneider, staff member of InfoCenter, took part for the second time and shares his impressions:

I was able to go on the language study trip to Dublin last year and was totally enthusiastic about the organisation, the city and the English lessons, which is why I was very pleased when I was offered the opportunity to take part again this year. I was already looking forward to an exciting week with nice colleagues, new insights into an exciting city and a promising, varied leisure programme.

Our English teacher Gavin put together a well thought-out and interesting programme for us. The focus was on teamwork and talking to each other, which helped us to get to know each other better and improve our language skills. After class, there was of course plenty of time to explore the city and take part in various activities: whether it was a visit to one of the numerous and informative museums, a walk-through Phoenix Park with an unexpected animal encounter, a trip to the sea or simply strolling through the city paired with a portion of fish and chips, one never got bored.

The evening ended with live music in one of the many pubs and a Guinness beer. One of the highlights was the dinner hosted by the International Office in a church that had been converted into a restaurant/bar, including traditional river dancing and live Irish music.

Conclusion: My expectations of this continuing education programme were met – and exceeded! I was able to demonstrate my improved English skills immediately at the InfoCenter during information talks in English – thanks Gavin! I would definitely recommend this language study trip (but if you plan to travel to Dublin, you should definitely pack a rain jacket)!
