Building a Chatbot – Joint Student Project between Fontys UAS and UAS Technikum Wien

12 February, 2020

During the winter semester 2019/20, a small group of Software Engineering students from the Dutch Fontys University of Applied Sciences and Computer Science students of UAS Technikum Wien worked together on a joint project with the goal to develop a chatbot application.

During a kick off visit in Eindhoven, the students were able to meet in person, to develop a first project idea and to plan for the months to come. The work was evenly divided among them, thus establishing a good structure for the run of the semester. Through online meetings and informal communication, the students kept each other up to date and discussed ongoing issues with each other. Constant feedback from lecturers of both institutions further helped to improve the learning effects of the project.

During a final visit of Eindhoven students and lecturers in Vienna in the beginning of January, the group finalised the chatbot application and gave a final presentation to show the ideas behind their development and its results demonstrated the text, image, and speech functions of their chatbot. During the wrap up visit in Vienna, the project teams presented their work to the Austrian-Dutch panel of lecturers.

After a successful first run of the project and positive feedback from the students, a next round of the joint project is planned for upcoming semesters. Overall, this experience not only gave the students involved the opportunity to further develop their skills in software engineering, but also to gain international experience and meet like-minded people from Europe.
