Coderetreat: Thinking outside the box when programming

08 November, 2021
On November 13, the “Global Day of Coderetreat” will take place, and the community is also organizing such an event in Vienna. The focus is on trying out new approaches, learning from colleagues and improving one’s own skills.
On November 13, software developers and programmers around the world organize the Global Day of Coderetreat. On the initiative of the “Softwerkskammer”, such an event has also been taking place in Vienna on this day for several years, where the focus is on joint programming away from the usual deadline and development pressure, the targeted practice of old and new approaches, and learning from each other.
“The target group is people who are interested in software development and who are open to new things,” says Rea Sutter, who is part of the Viennese organizing team, graduated from the FH Technikum Wien with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and also works as an external lecturer at the university. “Normally, you program to finish and don’t have time for perfectionism. The coderetreat is about exactly that: looking at a problem from different sides, trying out different approaches and thus also exploring limits.”
The Vienna branch of “Softwerkskammer” organizes so-called “coding dojos” on an irregular basis and a coderetreat every two months. Due to Corona, the past events all took place online; the all-day event on November 13 is the first live meeting of the community after a long break. Participants will be assigned programming-related tasks in alternating teams of two, and the results will then be reflected on in the group after each of the short sessions.
“It’s also about getting to know different approaches, looking beyond one’s own nose and thus broadening one’s horizons,” says Sutter. The Coderetreat is not only aimed at students or experienced professionals; amateur programmers are also welcome, he says: “A wide variety of people come from very different areas, with different programming languages and at different levels. No matter how much experience you have, you can always contribute ideas.”
In addition to programming, there will be plenty of opportunity to exchange ideas during the joint lunch break and at the end of the event. The coderetreat is also intended to provide an opportunity to get to know the community better. The number of participants is limited, and registration is possible here.
