COIN Project GridEdge: Spring Meeting of the Smart Grids Technology Platform

11 May, 2023
At the beginning of May, the spring meeting of the Smart Grids Technology Platform took place at the Energy Base of UAS Technikum Wien and at the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT).
The COIN project “GridEdge” was presented at the Smart Grids meeting by Alexander Erber (Lector/Researcher Renewable Energies). Manfred Tragner (Head of Renewable Energy Studies) and Bernhard Grasel (Lecturer/Researcher Renewable Energy) each hosted a topic table of the World Café. The meeting concluded with a lab tour with Bernhard Grasel at the Hybrid Energy and Smart Grid Lab at Energybase.
So what are smart grids?
Smart grids are power grids that support energy and cost efficient system operation for future requirements through coordinated management using real-time and bidirectional communication between grid components, generators, storage and consumers. Based on communication technologies, they enable energy and cost efficient balancing between a variety of power consumers, power generators, and power storage devices. An end-to-end communication capability from generators to consumers is necessary to ensure a sustainable, economic and secure electricity supply in the face of increasingly volatile generation.
Smart Grids Austria Technology Platform
The Smart Grids Austria Technology Platform brings together key players from the energy sector, industry and research and has established itself as a competent point of contact for the public sector since it was founded in 2008. In this way, it can make a significant contribution to shaping the framework conditions for R&D and the implementation of innovative technologies for the future energy system. The technology platform pursues the goal of joining forces for an intelligent energy system in order to develop an energy and cost efficient system operation and thus to advance the energy transition in Austria. Austrian competence in the energy sector is to be strengthened through lighthouse projects and made internationally visible.
