Energy concept for the city of Kemi, Finland

After its first successful run in October 2018, the Cooperative International Student Project (CIP) took place for the second time in November 2019. During the run of the winter term 2019/2020, students of both the Mechanical Engineering program of Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the Urban Renewable Energy Technologies of UAS Technikum Wien worked together on an energy concept for the city of Kemi, Finland, by assessing the potentials of different renewable energy sources at the new district heating plant area.

Distance lectures prior to their week in Vienna as well as after their trip provided a framework for the project and ensured quality and valuable learning outcomes. During the project week itself, students had the opportunity to work on their projects together and receive constant feedback from lecturers of both institutions.

A highlight of the week marked the excursion to Lower Austria for two reasons: The first stop brought the group to Haubiversum – Bread World, where they learned about the technology of bread baking, which also served as teambuilding among the students. A visit of the local District Heating Plant in Seitenstetten was the second stop, which brought insights into the work of a district heating plant not unlike the one in Kemi, which helped the students to gain further helpful knowledge for their own projects.

The successful week was rounded off by the presentations of the results of all groups to their supervisors and lecturers of both Lapland UAS as well as UAS Technikum Wien.
