FHTW-student wins bronze at Microsoft Excel World Championships

15 December, 2023

Business informatics student Benjamin Weber showed a masterly performance at the Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge in Arizona.

The Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge (MECC) offers students worldwide the opportunity to improve their Excel skills and logical thinking and to immerse themselves in the world of data analysis. At the same time, the MECC allows participants to meet like-minded people from different parts of the world and compete in an international competition.

The MECC is a joint initiative of the Financial Modeling World Cup (FMWC) and the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona. Its aim is to supplement university curricula with practical Excel training and to prepare students optimally for their professional careers. Monthly challenges offer participants the opportunity to deepen and expand their Excel skills in various subject areas.

The MECC also includes two competitions in which participants have a maximum of two hours to complete complex tasks and then upload their solutions to the competition platform. Points are awarded for speed and correct solutions. The 20 participants with the highest total points from both competitions will be invited to a two-day event at the University of Arizona.

Final in the Esports Arena at the University of Arizona

The event began with a meet & greet where everyone had the opportunity to get to know each other personally. In the semi-finals, all 20 people competed against each other, and the top 8 advanced to the final, which took place at the University of Arizona’s Esports Arena and was streamed live on YouTube.

In 2023, more than 3,000 students from all over the world took part in the MECC. One of them was Benjamin Weber from the Bachelor’s degree program in Business Informatics at UAS Technikum Wien. Congratulations on his third place in the final!

Apart from the competition, there was still time to visit the impressive Grand Canyon and explore the capital of Arizona, Phoenix. The participation in the Excel World Championship was supported by the International Office of the UAS Technikum with an amount of 460 €.
