Queer city walk of the “Queer Engineer” network

27 April, 2023

On April 25, Queer Engineers once again participated in a Queer City Walk organized by QWien, the Center for Queer History.

Together with members of the FH Campus Wien they were received by their guide, Gerd Brandstätter, in front of the Türkis Rosa Lila Villa. There they immediately immersed themselves in the history of the villa, which has served as an inclusive safe space for the queer scene in Vienna for four decades. Along the left side of Wienzeile they visited, among others, the Apollo and the Naschmarkt, historically significant places of queer Viennese history. Although their guide Gerd led them through Vienna’s 6th district with quite a bit of humor, they were also confronted with depressing fates, such as the mass arrest of gay men during the Nazi era, who were waylaid in the Esterhazy Baths during the Nazi regime.

The city walk ended with a common drink in the queer cocktail bar “Marea Alta” in nice company. They are already looking forward to further informative as well as community-building events and thank you for organizing the city walk!

Queer Engineer is the network of UAS Technikum Wien for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer students and staff and was founded in 2022. Queer Engineer stands for acceptance, tolerance and inclusion. Allies are welcome in the network – these are people who are not part of the queer community themselves, but support it and work with us for an open and appreciative organizational culture at the FHTW.
