Romanian students learn to solder and help people with disabilities

FHTW project team held workshop at Transilvania Brașov University.
At the beginning of May 2023, a soldering workshop was held at the University of Transilvania Brașov (Romania) as part of the Inclusion International project funded by the City of Vienna (Proj.-Nr: 33-02).
One of the goals of the project team is to promote e-Inclusion and share Assistive Technologies with civil society. To move one step closer to this goal, Alija Sabic and Agnes Scheibenreif traveled to the partner university in Romania and soldered the open-source kit FABI (Flexible Assistive Button Interface) with the students – a configurable button interface for people with disabilities, which was developed at UAS Technikum Wien as part of several research projects (currently Knowledge Hub for Accessible Technologies). Students of electrical engineering had the opportunity to learn soldering as a skill or to test already existing basic knowledge, to experience manufacturing of electronics and to produce assistive technologies themselves and to get to know their functions.
Afterwards, the manufactured FABIs were donated to organizations for the disabled in Romania (Hope without Limits, Fundatia Rafael) and charity organizations in the UK (Star International, Belief in Action) and the functioning of the FABIs was trained in further workshops with the caregivers and therapists.
