Together against the shortage of skilled workers: FMTI promotes mechanical engineering study places at UAS Technikum Wien

01 December, 2022
The Association of the Metalworking Industry strengthens its commitment to the training of highly qualified technicians and takes over the costs for ten study places in the bachelor’s program in mechanical engineering at the UAS Technikum Wien.
With a Bachelor’s and a Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering, the UAS Technikum Wien has a comprehensive and tailor-made training program in its portfolio for this highly sought after field. Already at the start of the bachelor’s program in 2014, the Fachverband Metalltechnische Industrie (FMTI) was on board as a partner to financially support the training of urgently needed technicians in the segment. The successful cooperation between Technikum and FMTI is now being continued: The trade association is covering the costs of ten bachelor’s degree places with around 100,000 euros per year, thus making an important contribution to attracting additional skilled workers to the industry.
“In order to meet the strong demand for highly qualified mechanical engineers, it is very important to us to be able to provide additional study places through external funding, even outside the scope of federal funding. We are therefore particularly pleased about the targeted support of the FMTI,” says Florian Eckkrammer, Managing Director of the UAS Technikum Wien.
“At the same time, as an educational institution, Technikum has special expertise in the technology sector, a good knowledge of the industry and close ties to industry. We were therefore pleased to decide to continue our funding,” says Sabine Hesse, Managing Director of FMTI. Peter Zeman, Chairman of the Education Committee of the professional association, adds: “The combination of sound basic education in the broad field of mechanical engineering combined with a lot of practical relevance is particularly important for us. With its bachelor’s degree program, the UAS Technikum Wien meets the needs of our industry exactly, which was an important aspect in the decision to enter into this cooperation.”
About the study program at the UAS Technikum Wien
In the bachelor’s program at the UAS Technikum Wien, students acquire the necessary know-how in six semesters to meet the diverse challenges of mechanical engineering. In addition to teaching engineering and scientific fundamentals, the program focuses on the areas of design and manufacturing. “Digitalization, which has now conquered almost all industries, is just as ubiquitous, because innovative, creative mechanical engineers equipped with digital skills are needed on the job market more than ever. Areas such as robotics, automation and digital twins are now indispensable,” explains Patrick Eisner, head of the program.
After completing the bachelor’s program, students can further deepen their knowledge in the master’s program in mechanical engineering with a focus on digitalization topics
About the UAS Technikum Wien
UAS Technikum Wien is Austria’s university of applied sciences for technology and digitization. Since its foundation in 1994, it has produced 15,000 graduates. Currently, 4,500 students in 28 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs are being trained to become top executives for the economy. About the metalworking industry
The metalworking industry is Austria’s strongest sector. More than 1,200 companies from the industrial sectors of mechanical engineering, plant construction, steel construction, metal goods and foundry form the backbone of the domestic industry. The export-oriented sector is structured as a medium-sized enterprise, more than 85% of which are family businesses, and is responsible for a quarter of all Austrian exports. Numerous companies are world market leaders and “hidden champions”.
The metalworking industry directly employs more than 134,000 people, including over 7,100 apprentices, and thus indirectly secures close to 250,000 jobs in Austria. In 2021, it generated a production value of around 43.8 billion euros. The Fachverband Metalltechnische Industrie is one of the largest business and employer associations in Austria and is an independent organization within the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. www.metalltechnischeindustrie.at
