UAS Technikum Wien Offers First AI Bot for Moodle

Innovative tool to provide students with tailored AI support in self-study from 2024/25.
The University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien is setting new standards in digital teaching: with the new Moodle plugin “AI-Bot”, a technology to support learning and teaching will be used at the Technikum from the next academic year. The plugin, developed by UAS Technikum Wien together with external partners, integrates the advanced artificial intelligence of OpenAI and enables students to have a personalized learning experience directly in their Moodle courses.
FHTW was looking for a tailor-made tool that could be integrated into individual courses in Moodle and was in line with existing data protection regulations. The aim was to offer students improved support in their self-study. Based on this need, the AI-Bot Moodle plugin was developed and has now been tested since May 2024 and subsequently made available to all Moodle users worldwide via Github. The aim is to continuously improve the use of AI in teaching and respond to the needs of students. The plugin offers a chat with ChatGPT, but no content from the course is uploaded.
Key features of the AI-Bot plugin:
- OpenAI integration: At the heart of the plugin is the integration of OpenAI’s advanced AI model ChatGPT 4.0.
- Question/prompt limit: Teachers can set how many questions or prompts each student can ask in the Moodle course to ensure fair use. For example, it can be specified that each student may ask a maximum of 10 questions per subject area.
- Chat and assistant: Students can have interactive conversations with the AI bot via chat. In the future, an assistant for more specific and task-oriented answers will also be available after a detailed legal review.
- Completion Prompt: This field allows teachers to define topics to which the chat is allowed to give answers in order to control the interactions.
- Source of Truth: Teachers can specify a reliable source of information for the AI to consider when answering questions to ensure relevance and accuracy.
- Anonymized log report: The teacher can see which questions have been asked and which answers ChatGPT has provided. This optimizes the collaboration with the students in the classroom through precise preparation based on the logs.
“The AI-Bot Moodle plugin marks a significant step towards a modern, interactive learning experience that meets the individual needs of students. By integrating ChatGPT 4.0, students can access high-quality self-paced teaching support alongside top lecturers, helping them to better understand complex concepts and deepen their own learning,” says Managing Director Florian Eckkrammer.
“UAS Technikum Wien is proud to play a pioneering role in the implementation of innovative teaching technologies and to drive forward the digital transformation of education. With the AI-Bot plugin, FHTW will continue to consolidate its position as a leading educational institution and offer its students the best possible learning experience,” says Managing Director Barbara Czak-Pobeheim.
