Video analysis for soccer clubs: Start-up zone14 as part of the Entrepreneurship Initiative of UAS Technikum Wien

04 August, 2023

zone14 deals with the use of artificial intelligence for video analysis in soccer training and is part of the Entrepreneurship Initiative of UAS Technikum Wien.

Video analysis and data comparison are very important for success in professional soccer, but are also becoming more widespread in the amateur sector. The Viennese company zone14, which was launched in 2021, has already established itself in this field in Austria; in addition to well-known professional clubs such as FK Austria Wien or Wiener Sport-Club, amateur teams such as FC Stadlau, SV Großweikersdorf or SK Rum also rely on zone14’s system.

The Sportstech start-up is part of the Entrepreneurship Initiative of UAS Technikum Wien, with which the University of Applied Sciences supports corporate partners in terms of talent acquisition and growth. It deals with the use of artificial intelligence for video analysis in soccer training. zone14 made it into the one-year scale-up program of the renowned INiTS HighTech Incubator in Vienna. This supports selected companies by means of financing and networking and in this way helps to implement the business model.

In terms of personnel, the start-up has already been associated with the University of Applied Sciences for some time – two of the founders are graduates. Simon Schmiderer graduated from the Technikum with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Sports Equipment Technology (today: Human Factors and Sports Engineering, and Sports Technology). Tobias Gahleitner, on the other hand, is a graduate of the Smart Homes and Assistive Technologies bachelor’s program, and he now works as a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences, as does Lukas Grömer.

“We at zone14 help coaches and analysts by means of state-of-the-art technology and user-friendly tools to focus on their core competencies – improving their teams and finding creative solutions and tactics – without much effort. Clubs can thus offer their fans an even better experience by means of beautiful and successful soccer,” Schmiderer, Grömer and Gahleitner from zone14 describe their project.
