Workshop for Elementary Schools: “Using the Internet Safely”

29 June, 2023
What dangers are hidden behind viruses and hackers? Answers to these and other questions were worked out together.
On June 14, 2023, Manuela Gastinger, Sarah Moravec, Nicholas Gettinger and Florian Sixtl held the workshop “Using the Internet safely” in front of two fourth grade classes of the elementary school GTVS Europaschule, 1200 Vorgartenstraße, as part of the project work in the master’s program IT-Security and as part of the educational initiative Digital City Wien. The 51 children and 4 teachers were presented with the topics “Using smartphones and the Internet safely”, “What dangers are hidden behind hackers and viruses” and “How do I remember a secure password” in two ways.
Each class was introduced to the various cyber security topics once via a lecture with worksheets and once via a learning app. The children were very enthusiastic and the teachers also learned a few new topics.
The aim of the project was to present the right topics in the right form for the children in an elementary school. The feedback and experience gained from this workshop will be incorporated into an improved workshop concept, which will be offered to interested elementary schools at the Digital City Wien Days and at other workshops as part of the Digital City Wien educational initiative at UAS Technikum Wien.
