<p>The Department of Electronic Engineering comprises the ‘Electronic Based Systems’ and ‘Electronics and Telecommunications’ competence centers. The spectrum ranges from teaching activities in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs to top-level research.</p>

<p>The competence center Embedded Systems builds a bridge between the disciplines Electronic Engineering and Computer Sciences. In addition to teaching, research and development is an essential element of the competence field, which focuses primarily on the research field of Embedded Systems and Cyber-Physical Systems. The competence field Embedded Systems comprises the subfields Embedded Software Design, Chip Design, Hardware Design, Real-Time and Distributed Embedded Systems, Verification of Embedded Systems.</p>

<p>The "IoT and Electronics" field of competence covers the areas of electrical engineering, electronics, electrical measurement technology and sensor technology, telecommunications technology, and the application areas Internet of Things and Smart Homes in teaching and research.</p>

<li><strong>Electrical engineering and electronics:</strong> Fundamentals of direct current, alternating current and three-phase current technology, installation technology, electrical and electronic circuit technology.</li>



<li><strong>Electrical Measurement and Sensor Technology, Signal Processing:</strong> Deals with devices and methods for measuring electrical and physical quantities and their digital signal processing in embedded systems.</li>



<li><strong>Audio and video technology:</strong> Systems and methods for optical and acoustic processing in audio, video and sensor technology.</li>



<li><strong>Communication technologies: </strong>Telecommunication and mobile networks, network technology and security, virtualization of networks and network functions, network management, Big Data Networks, application-controlled IP networks, Internet technologies (VoIP, SIP, IMS, FMC, NGN), satellite communication, communications technology and digital broadcasting.</li>



<li><strong>Internet of Things: </strong>sensor networks, data processing in IoT networks, hardware and embedded and safety relevant software components, system architectures of IoT networks and IoT end devices, edge computing, wireless communications and systems.</li>

<p>The field of competence "Power Electronics and Control Systems" covers the design and construction of power electronic circuits, electrical drive technology as well as control and regulation technology in teaching and research.</p>

<p>The following subfields are covered:</p>



<ul>
<li><strong>Power electronics and energy technology:</strong> Design and layout of power electronic circuits, taking into account criteria such as energy efficiency, material usage, installation space, service life, costs and reliability.</li>



<li><strong>Drive technology:</strong> DC and three-phase motor drives (motors and generators) with coordination to the specific fields of application. These fields include electromobility, sustainable and decentralized power generation, and actuators for building, manufacturing and other process technology.</li>



<li><strong>Control engineering:</strong> application-oriented control and regulation of electrical components and systems such as drives, energy generators, energy storage systems (e.g. batteries), air-conditioning systems, lighting systems as well as processes (sequence control). Conceptual design and development within practical constraints defined by control loop hardware (e.g., controller, actuator, and metering elements) including higher-level requirements such as power factor correction to improve power factor.</li>



<li><strong>Power generation and storage:</strong> development of power electronic systems for energy conversion, intermediate storage and redistribution. This includes, for example, generator systems, chargers, battery management systems (BMS), and rectifiers and inverters for grid feeding.</li>



<li><strong>High-frequency technologies:</strong> measurement and design of circuits in the high-frequency range, EMC measurements.</li>
</ul>
